“At a time when working families across this country are facing a jobs crisis and
unprecedented hardship, our partnership with the United Way is more valued than ever.
Workers and their communities are hurting and the services of the United Way
are vital to the very survival of so many. The vision of LIVE UNITED
could not be more appropriate for these times”
Richard L. Trumka, President, AFL-CIO
Since 1946, United Way of Palm Beach County and the Unions of the Palm Beach-Treasure Coast have enjoyed a cooperative relationship through which they provide services to members of organized labor, their families and their communities through the AFL-CIO Community Services Program and its Liaison.
An AFL-CIO Executive Council statement passed in February of 1956 developed the statement of principles for the AFL-CIO Community Services Program.
Two very important principles from that statement are:
1. The union member is first and foremost a member of the community.
2. Prevention of social problems is preferable to the best treatment of social ills.
The AFL-CIO Community Services program of Palm Beach County:
Service to workers and their families
Service to the community
Support to build local unions and capacity for the central labor council
Guidance to improve support systems, public and private for workers and their families
Support to improve the social and economic conditions of working families to reduce their need for services and assistance
United Way of Palm Beach County salutes the following Unions for their outstanding participation in the workplace campaign as part of our Top 10 Corporate Campaigns.
